"Chasing The Horizon" by Derek Wynans is one idiot's account of the 2008 Round Britain Powerboat Race- and yes, I am that idiot.
This book tells of my adventures as I tried to cover one of the toughest offshore races ever held- 1,300 nautical miles around the UK. I managed it- somehow- without even owning a boat of my own. Instead, I resorted to begging and bribing total strangers to let me tag along for each leg of the race, and you know what? It actually worked! Of course it wasn't all plain sailing; over the course of those ten days I experienced a 60 knot stuffing; I was almost arrested for setting of an EPIRB; I was verbally abused by a mangy parrot; and I was invited to spend the night in a Polish-run brothel.
But there were some incredible highlights too: racing at 80 knots in 7-foot seas; chatting about boats and weather forecasts with millionaires and billionaires; and of course the thrill of being in the middle of the pack as 47 high-tuned powerboats nail the throttles and scream off towards the horizon, 200 miles away...

Derek
