  • Saunders was heart and soul of Canadian rowing

Claude Saunders liked a good joke, so he wouldn't mind being identified as a master of a sport that consisted of sitting on one's behind and going backwards.

In contrast to that image, Saunders, who passed away this week in his 96th year, was a progressive and omnipotent presence in Canadian rowing.

Sandy to friends, he didn't sit back or look back in taking the subject of his passion to five Olympics. And he pushed the sport forward on the domestic front.

Saunders was the heart of Leander Boat Club and the soul of the Henley Regatta, one of the world's top meetings of boat people, heading the former for 50 years and the latter for 40.

He opened rowing to women and brought the sport to high schools.
