Red Cross National Lifejacket Day
Red Cross National Lifejacket Day May 14th
The Red Cross needs your help! Our drowning research shows that almost all boaters who drown were not wearing a lifejacket (or not wearing it properly done up). Although the law only requires having a lifejacket on board your vessel, survivors of boating mishaps unanimously stress that “Close by isn’t close enough.”
Every year, almost 200 Canadians drown while boating. Most of these, 87%, are not wearing a lifejacket, or do not have it properly done up. This summer, Red Cross encourages all boaters, at all skill levels, and in all kinds of watercrafts to drop the excuses. Make sure that everyone in the family is zipped and clipped into their lifejacket before you step foot in the boat. And remember to be a good role model for young boaters too – don’t just make kids wear lifejackets, wear yours too.

Couldn't agree more - 9 out of 10 people that drown are NOT wearing a lifejacket.
From: http://www.cdc.gov/HomeandRecreation...-factsheet.htmLack of appropriate choices in recreational boating. In 2006, the U.S. Coast Guard received reports for 4,967 boating incidents; 3,474 boaters were reported injured, and 710 died. Among those who drowned, 9 out of ten were not wearing life jackets. Most boating fatalities from 2006 (70%) were caused by drowning; the remainder were due to trauma, hypothermia, carbon monoxide poisoning, or other causes. Open motor boats were involved in 45% of all reported incidents, and personal watercraft were involved in another 24%
